i've only seen 22 of these (i've marked them with asterisks*). i definitely want to track down a number of these films (and the above synopses tell me enough to intrigue me as well). how many have of these you seen? are there others you would recommend?

I've seen just two. It's A Wonderful Life and Schindler's List.
I've only heard of a couple more. I'm curious though.

I think I mentioned The Weeping Camel already but in addition, Spirited Away pretty cool and inventive though a bit strange. Actually, any Miyazaki film is worth checking out. They still appeal to the Disney crowd but contain much more unique and creative storytelling as well as fascinating animation...your boys might enjoy Ponyo or My Neighbour Totoro...my favourite is Howl's Moving Castle and Porco Rosso is great, too.

I think you'd enjoy the Three Colours films because of the use of colour in addition to compelling story. And Tender Mercies is a Robert Duvall classic...a predecessor to Crazy Heart, if you liked that one.

@wenda

i've had a couple of people recommend the weeping camel. i have seen the three colours trilogy though it was quite some time ago. i actually have the set - i just haven't made time to watch them. i seriously covet kieslowski's dekalog. and miyazaki is definitely on my "to see soon" list. after reading the synopses, i also really want to see andrei rublev and ordet - they sound fascinating. lots of good stuff to see...
